Gigi Myung
In 2005, Gigi Myung was transferred from Washington, D.C., to Houston, to work for W.W. Grainger, Inc. Two years later, she was recruited by Houston’s Group 1 Automotive, Inc. to lead their turnaround, and she retired at the end of 2011.
After taking some time off to recharge from twenty-five years of leading for Fortune 500 companies, she found the time to serve on several nonprofits in both a board capacity and as a volunteer. Gigi serves on the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Houston Arts Alliance Commission, YMCA of Alief, and Teen & Family Services. She is very active in the Greater Houston Partnership/Executive Women’s Partnership Executive Committee and the Center for Houston’s Future. Most recently, Gigi was appointed to the non-partisan Texas Business Leadership Council, which is a statewide network of CEOs who advance a long-term vision to their elected leadership for a prosperous Texas in a globally competitive business environment. Houston Woman Magazine named her one of Houston’s Fifty Most Influential Women of 2015.
After finishing the Center for Houston’s Future in 2013, she was inspired to make a difference in education. Upon hearing Rice University’s, Dr. Stephen Klineberg share the statistic that the number of kids who cannot read at a 3rd grade level by the 3rd grade is what our states use to determine the number of jail beds needed, she knew she had to do something. Hence, Gigi has become active with Alief ISD, as well as the Alief YMCA. She was on Alief’s Bond Committee to increase investments in the schools to provide better facilities, attract and retain great staff, and provide career paths that may or may not include a college degree.
Gigi’s heart for helping others starts with her parents, who immigrated as students to the U.S. from Korea (and were later match-mated). She says, “My parents taught me that we were blessed to be a blessing to others. They influenced me to be generous of spirit, respect others, and lead by example. And henceforth, I find joy and success with my family, my friends, my faith, and my professional life.”
As an executive, she has worked in the oil & gas, automotive, technology, and manufacturing sectors. Prior to her current role as President & CEO of GLM Energy, Inc., an oil and gas investment consultancy firm, her experience includes Toyota Motors Sales USA, Nissan Motor Corporation N.A., W.W. Grainger, Inc., Dell, Inc., The Home Depot, and Group 1 Automotive, Inc. She serves on the board of CDM Enterprise LLC and Optech4D, Inc.
Gigi earned a Master of Business Administration and a Master in International Management from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale, Arizona. She holds a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma.
She has lived in D.C., Chicago, Shanghai, Madrid, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Denver, Seoul, Tulsa, and Charleston, WV, but says, “Houston is my favorite home!”
