Jane Cheeks
Jane E. Cheeks is a tenured HR management professional with diversified leadership successes in both public and corporate sectors. Cheeks holds a solid reputation for executing large-scale HR consolidation strategies and maintaining oversight of multi-million-dollar budgets. Cheeks is a Jackson State University alumna, who holds a distinguished designation as a member of the International Public Management Association – HR.
Cheeks currently lends nearly 20 years of municipal expertise to her role as the Director of Human Resources for the City of Houston. Under her leadership are nine chief divisions and 270+ HR professionals who ensure the City of Houston is adequately staffed with top talent. With the aid of her massive staff, she is able to oversee the delivery of essential City services including: Staffing, Health Benefits Administration, Employee Safety, Training & Professional Development, Regulatory Compliance, Information Security and Compensation.
Each year, under Cheeks’ purview, nearly 120 graduates successfully complete the City’s Leadership Institute Program and the City’s Accreditation Program for Supervisors, respectively. Her insight and leadership style render her highly sought out to mentor Senior-Level HR professionals across the City.
Most notable, among her recent works within the City, Cheeks led negotiation efforts with the HOPE Labor Union, which resulted in a pay increases for city employees.
Prior to her leadership within the City of Houston, Cheeks served as the Director of Security for SETEC Protection Service LP, a subsidiary of HINES. In this role, she led the administration and maintenance of policies to ensure the physical safety of all organizational assets.
At her core, Cheeks is a servant leader who simply believes in hard work and unwavering integrity in a political environment. She attributes her success to the dedication of her staff and her commitment to serve the residents of Houston.
