Loren Lane

Loren Lane is the First Lady of Texas Southern University. Lane is the wife of the new President of Texas Southern University, Dr. Austin A. Lane.  Her role goes beyond being the wife of the President, leading a mentorship program for freshmen to help them secure their path toward graduation within four years.  She is responsible for cultivating initiatives to secure funding for scholarships and serving as a special ambassador for Texas Southern University students in all classifications.

Lane’s priorities at Texas Southern University are aligned with Dr. Lane’s vision for the university, including student success, academic quality, culture, funding, and partnerships. She is committed to raising funds for students in at-risk situations who are approaching graduation.  She is Chair of the university’s signature event, A Maroon and Grey Affair, and the 2017 Coronation Ball for Miss TSU.

Lane earned an Executive Master of Business Administration degree from the C.T. Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism and Mass Communications from Rutgers University. She was an adjunct professor at Lone Star College, teaching a required course introducing new students to higher education and mentoring those students through graduation.

Lane’s career in executive health care includes developing analysis, advocacy, and comprehensive marketing strategies. Lane is currently the Key Account Manager (neurology) for EMD Serono, Inc., managing sales, budget, marketing, communications, and compliance for the Texas region.

Her past professional experience is impressive, as she has served in the following roles:

  • Neurology Diagnostic Imaging Representative for General Electric (Houston)
  • Senior Osteoporosis Specialty Representative for Merck and Company, Inc. (Houston and New York)
  • Ophthalmology Specialty Representative
  • Manager of Public Relations and Advocacy Development for the Pharmacia Corporation (now Pfizer, Inc.) in New Jersey and New York

Lane is dedicated to servant leadership, both at Texas Southern University and in the Houston community. Her personal motto comes from India’s renowned civil rights leader, the late Mahatma Gandhi – “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

Lane and her father were also fond of Gandhi’s most-popular philosophy, “If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change.  As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him.  We need not wait to see what others do…” – a quote that was shortened and more recognized as, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Lane is a member of Jack and Jill, Inc.  She and her husband are members of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church. They have three children – Lauren, Chase, and Lance.
